When it comes to chatting to people online, there are a few rules that should be followed in terms of what you can and can't ask them. It's harder to judge if someone is making a joke or being serious if you aren't talking to them on the phone or face to face, so you shouldn't even ask something a bit dodgy in an attempt to be humorous.

While it's good to get to know people, whether as friends or potential partners, you don't want to pry too much, especially not right at the beginning of chatting to them. It is a good idea to keep it light – this doesn't mean asking about the weather near them – and allow the conversation to develop naturally.

To help you avoid putting your foot in it, we've got a few types of questions that you should avoid asking:

No nudes

This should go without saying, but we're going to reiterate it anyway. One of the biggest no-nos is asking someone for nude photos of any kind. There's not really a time when this is okay, so you can't make excuses for it.

While we're on the subject, don't send nudes to people either, especially if they don't ask for them or haven't even said hello!

Specific addresses

Don't try and get a really specific address from someone as it's a bit creepy. Asking where someone is from is totally fine and they'll give you the answer they are most comfortable with. However, pushing for more details isn't a good idea and could make others wary about talking to you.

What they make

It's a bit rude to ask how much money someone gets paid in their job and can make totally the wrong impression. You don't want someone to think you're only talking to them because they look wealthy, so don't go beyond asking what they do for a living.

The ex

If you're hoping to meet someone romantically, it is never a good idea to start a conversation about the dreaded ex. It can make a conversation a bit awkward and completely kill the vibe you had going, so it's generally a good idea to stay away from stories about the ex, whether it's yours or theirs.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801821869-ADNFCR
