A man is to raise money for Help for Heroes by cycling from London to Paris.

Stephen Roberts is to start his 500 km challenge in Crystal Palace and hopes to end up at the Eiffel Tower, the Sunderland Echo reports.

The 27-year-old, who is a care assistant from Hetton, has set himself a fundraising target for the event – which will take place next May – of £2,000.

Mr Roberts was inspired to test himself after he successfully completed the Coast to Coast charity cycle from Whitehaven to Sunderland in September of this year.

Speaking about his next target, he said: "There's going to be a lot of other people too, but at this point I think I'm the only person from the region doing it."

In order to take part in the challenge, Mr Roberts first needs to raise £1,450 to cover the costs of the trip.
