Ben Fogle’s adventurer lifestyle means he has to be brave but it is nothing compared to what serviceman and women fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan face on a daily basis.
Writing in the Daily Mail, the TV presenter and explorer claims rowing across the Atlantic and trekking to the South Pole pushed him to the limit, but what soldiers and other armed services personnel go through is on another level.
He recently made a visit to Headley Court military rehabilitation centre in Surrey and was moved by the brave individuals who told him their stories.
While these men and women were injured, their pride is what shone through and how pleased they were to have served queen and country.
"Here were genuine heroes – not a word I use lightly. And, quite simply, I was overwhelmed and inspired by their stoicism in the face of despair," Mr Fogle wrote.
Tory leader David Cameron recently told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that, if the Conservatives are voted in at the next election, they will double the bonuses paid to soldiers fighting in Afghanistan.
