Single soldiers might be encouraged to find a new partner after hearing that doing so could save them a great deal of money.

According to a study from Co-operatives UK, the cost of a single life now stands at £5014.15 a year, as this is the amount people save when they are in a couple.

Outgoings such as bills, food and housing all add up and mean that those living on their own end up shelling out more than individuals in a relationship.

Secretary general Ed Mayo comments: "Everyone is experiencing greater pressure on household budgets, but people who are living alone are suffering more than most, at a time when there are more single households than ever before in the UK."

He says sharing can make people happy, so there is an added incentive to find love and pinch a few pennies at the same time.

Recent research from the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University, published in the Archives of Sexual Behaviour, found the most satisfied couples in long-term relationships tend to frequently kiss, cuddle and caress their partners.
