Southport Art Gallery is helping to support soldiers with a poetry-inspired event next month.

In honour of World War I poet Wilfred Owen the gallery is launching a week-long exhibition on October 31st to raise money for Help for Heroes, the Midweek Advertiser reported.

Owen was killed at the Battle of the Sambre 92 years ago, just a week before the war came to an end.

The theme for the display is Dulce et Decorum Est and is inspired by Owen's work, which highlighted the conditions faced by World War I soldiers each day.

Local photographer and event organiser David Chadderton said the event honours all soldiers.

"Today, our British troops face a very different threat and operate in extreme conditions in many parts of the world," he commented.

The exhibition will feature the work of members of the Creative Arts Initiative.

Help for Heroes has recently received a boost of more than £10,000 following a cross-Channel kite-surfing relay race involving personnel from the Army, Navy and RAF.
