Army penpals like receiving letters from their correspondents, particularly at times when they might be missing their relatives.
This is according to an article in the Esterville Daily News, which commented on a penpal scheme with students from the city in Iowa who write to soldiers on duty.
Pupil Bryelle Curry writes to more than one penpal and said: "[They] told me about what they did and they liked getting cards.
"They miss their families."
Kristen Natterstad explained she knows her penpal Daniel appreciates the letters and likes to keep contact with the US while he is on duty in Afghanistan.
Messages are sent throughout the year, but the students like to make a special effort to write on occasions such as Christmas, the publication notes.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal recently reported on an 11-year-old who has established a penpal friendship with soldier Jake Cash, as the boy wishes to be in the armed forces when he is older.
