A dad whose son is serving in the armed forces has taken on a climbing challenge to help generate funds for soldiers wounded while serving their country.

Tony Preston said he was inspired to take part in the fundraiser after hearing of his son Jordan's tales of life on the front line in Afghanistan, the Lancashire Telegraph reports.

The 45-year-old decided to take on the steep climb of The Rake at Ramsbottom – a hill that is 947 yards in length but consists of parts that boast a gradient of one in 4.8.

He said: "It was really tough. When I was about 200 yards up the steep bit my quads were really burning and tight."

The escapade took him under four minutes and he has so far raised around £450 for Help for Heroes, Mr Preston added.

Red Lion Foods recently announced it is donating the profit it makes from selling its goods in supermarket to a number of charities that support members of the armed forces, the Sun reported.
