An army commander has paid thanks to a woman who has been endeavouring to raise money for wounded troops.

Brigadier Andrew Williams asked to meet up with Denise Bennett after hearing of her fundraising efforts, the Nottingham Post reports.

Coffee mornings and raffles organised by the 56-year-old, whose son and son-in-law have both served abroad with the Marines, have so far raised nearly £3,000 for the Help for Heroes charity.

Ms Bennett, of East Leake, said: "I don't want people to think I do this for myself. I just try to help those serving overseas."

Brigadier Williams, who is the commander of 49 (East) Brigade, got his chance to meet Ms Bennett at an event at County Hall in West Bridgford.

Mike Buss – dubbed The Running Man for his endurance efforts – is to take part in a challenge, which will see him attempt to run up and down Mount Snowdon as many times as he can in an hour, to raise money for charities including Help for Heroes.
