An army captain who was injured on duty last year has recovered to take part in a skiing competition, it has been revealed.

Captain Johnny Arkell, 26, received severe leg injuries after being blasted by shrapnel in Afghanistan last year, but has had four operations to repair the wound in his leg, he has been able to compete in the army’s UK divisional ski championships in the French Alps, the Swindon Advertiser reported.

"This has been brilliant fun and confirmed in my mind that there is nothing wrong with my leg and I am completely mended. It is fantastic to be here again having competed here two years ago and I’m skiing even better," he told the newspaper.

Meanwhile, lance corporal Ashley Irving, who lost some of his vision and suffered a fractured skull when a bullet went through his helmet in Afghanistan last year, has revealed that he has made a full recovery and is set to join the Duke of Lancaster’s 2nd Battalion.
