The support given to the armed forces means so much for the men and women serving in the military, it has been claimed.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup made his comments after thousands lined the streets of Cardiff on Saturday June 26th for Armed Forces Day, Wales Online reports.

Britain’s highest-ranking soldier said the turnout in the Welsh capital was "phenomenal" and "excellent".

He remarked: "The support the people of Cardiff have shown for our people on this special day is tremendous."

Armed Forces Day began last year to boost morale among troops and to give well-wishers an opportunity to show their appreciation for the work being done by the service men and women.

In attendance at this year’s gathering were Prince Charles and his wife Camilla.

It was recently revealed Edinburgh could be in line to host the next Armed Forces Day spectacle in 2011, but it faces stiff competition for the honour from Belfast.
