An army officer is to trek through the Antarctic in order to raise fund for Help for Heroes.

Julian Mitchell is taking part in the British Services Antarctic Expedition 2012 – Spirit of Scott, WalesOnline reports.

The 34-year-old is one of 24 people heading to the uncharted area for the two-month journey and those taking part hope to raise £10,000 by completing the voyage.

Mr Mitchell told the news provider: "I've always wanted to go to Antarctica. It's always fascinated me, since reading about [Ernest] Shackleton as a child."

He added that as a climber, he is constantly looking to push himself to complete new adventures.

Six members of the Royal Navy, six from the Royal Air Force and 12 from the British Army make up the group who will be attempting the trek.

January 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of Robert Falcon Scott's attempt to reach the South Pole.
