Many of the landmines spread out across Afghanistan were left by the Soviets and a Scottish woman is doing her best to clear up the mess.

Flora Sutherland, who works at the Mine Action Co-ordination Centre of Afghanistan, goes out everyday in search of the weapons and clears them so locals and troops do not suffer, the Daily Record reported.

While she cannot root out every single one of them, the number of casualties from these explosives has fallen and she is proud that she is doing her bit to help soldiers bring peace and stability to the country.

"Like the women worrying about their children going to school and living under constant fear, once the field has been cleared that weight is lifted from them and that’s great to see," Ms Sutherland told the newspaper.

Christopher Stagg, from the 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, has been praised by army bosses for his ability to sniff out improvised explosive devices and save lives.
