A grandfather is to mark his 80th birthday with an adrenaline-pumping tandem skydive – and will be generating cash for wounded soldiers in the process.

John Gallagher, from Poole, will jump out of a plane at 12,000 ft in an effort to raise money for Help for Heroes, the Bournemouth Echo reports.

The former strongman – who has competed in many weightlifting competitions down the years – is a well-known local figure for his exploits, the newspaper observed.

He said leaping from such a height and falling at 120 mph is an exciting prospect.

"Some people of my age tend to retire and think they are useless, but I hope I can inspire them to motivate themselves and take on new challenges," Mr Gallagher added.

At the other end of the age scale, pupils from Bressingham Primary School recently raised more than £290 for Help for Heroes after taking part in a dressing up day, Diss Express reported.
