Residents in south London were shocked recently when their early morning stroll through a local park was interrupted by a seven-foot hedgehog.

But this was not a freak of nature or a giant beast on the loose, as it was instead a model installed by those behind a new David Attenborough show.

In order to promote the programme National Curiosities, Watch decided to introduce a life-like structure to Clapham Common, reports Metro.

Measuring 12-feet by eight-feet, the hedgehog display is actually larger than a real-life rhino and has become something of a hit with local people in south London.

It includes more than 2,000 soft wood spikes and was chosen as hedgehogs are just one of the animals due to feature in Natural Curiosities, along with the giant squid and owls.

Catherine Catton, senior commissioning editor at UKTV, said: "This series is amazing because it takes creatures that people think they know really well but actually reveals really unknown stories behind them."ADNFCR-2867-ID-801694896-ADNFCR
