A 500-mile charity bike ride is being completed by two injured army personnel for the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help charity.

The Ride of Britain will see the Rifleman Michael Swain and Rifleman Michael Paul Jacobs, alongside 30 able-bodied cyclists, journey from Edinburgh to London.

Care for Casualties and The Rifles Regimental Fund have helped the pair to get specially-adopted bikes to allow them to take part.

Mr Swain will use a hand bike, as he lost both of his legs in Afghanistan, while Mr Jacobs – who was blinded while on active service – is to use a tandem that will be guided by his brother.

Taggart star Blythe Duff got the race underway today (September 21st) and she said: "The work the armed forces do every day is so important and I wanted to be there to say thank you to them."

Those taking part hope to raise £40,000 for SSAFA – which has been in existence for over 100 years.
