One of the worst things about a first date with someone you've just met for the first time is not knowing. In the hours and days after your first date, you're likely to be wondering how it went. Did they like you? Will they want to see you again? And most importantly, did you enjoy it?

We take a look at some of the top signs that show you if your date has gone well.

You laughed

If you laughed a lot when you were on your first date with an online match, the chances are you enjoyed yourself. When we make a connection with someone, we tend to be able to joke and laugh in their presence, and this should be an indicator that it's all gone well…if the laughter was real, of course.

If they've told little jokes all night that had you genuinely giggling, and they were laughing with you, then you probably have a lot in common and really intrigued each other. However, if you were having to pretend to laugh at their jokes, or if they seemed to just be humouring you (no pun intended) when you tried to tell one, then it might be better to just call it a day on that particular venture.

No awkward silences

It's natural when you first meet someone that there might be a few awkward silences. If you both seem nervous at the start, that's only natural, but a sign of a good date will be how well things progressed from there. Once you find some common ground in terms of interests and talking points, it should become much easier for you and your date to have a flowing conversation.

A good way to judge how it's all gone is to ask yourself how the conversation was formed. Was it a natural conversation of the sort you might have with a friend, or was it more like an interview? If you've just sat there and had a back and forward question and answer session, it can feel quite awkward and a little forced, and it may be a good indicator of the fact things have perhaps not gone as well as you might have liked.

It continued

When you first meet someone for a date that you met online, it's recommended that you arrange something relatively short initially. This allows both parties the chance to get to know each other a little more. It's hard to form a true opinion of someone online after all, and sometimes you might just not have a spark when you meet face to face, so it's best to organise a quiet coffee for an hour or so for your first date, just to test the water.

However, if you're on that initial meeting, and the date continues on from there, of course it's a great sign that things have gone well. Perhaps you went on from your coffee to take a walk somewhere or even have dinner together? Well, if this happened, the chances are that the two of you simply didn't want to end that first date so soon, and all signs point to potential success if this is the case.

You're excited to see them again

The best advice after any date is to sleep on it. In the hours immediately after you've got home, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of the date and want to see the person again really soon. However, is this the way you really feel? It's always best to wait a while and see how the emotion changes.

If you wake the next morning and you really can't wait to see them again, then it's a wonderful sign. The fact that you've spent time with someone and you want to do it all over again so soon afterwards suggests that you had a great first date and indicates that there may well be something there. It's worth giving them another try and satisfying your eagerness to see the person again for another date if so.

They called

So it's a few days after the first date, and suddenly the phone rings – it's your date from the other night, and they want to see you again! It almost goes without saying that this is an indication of how well your date has gone, but if your potential partner calls in the few days after your first meeting then the chances are they are really keen to see you again.

On the other hand, if someone takes a long time to get back to you, or if they send you a text or an email, it may well be the case that they're undecided or not really all that interested. In these cases, it's better to chalk it up as an experience and move on – no one wants to have wasted their time, after all. ADNFCR-2867-ID-801763490-ADNFCR
