Some 25 per cent of Canadians have tried out online dating in an attempt to find that special someone.

Research carried out by Leger Marketing for QMI Agency – which is the leading news reference in the country – also found 36 per cent of 18 to 34-year-olds have taken to the web for this purpose.

Moreover, 18 per cent said social networks are their favourite places to meet someone.

Sidneyeve Matrix, an expert in digital trends at Queen's University, noted in the last three years it has become a much more popular activity for people to engage in.

"We're [now] much more sophisticated in our understanding of the nature of online friendship, so online romance is not that much of a leap," she added.

Younger individuals – which could include hot soldiers – are even more likely to use the internet to find a partner as they have grown up with computers.
