Single soldiers and others trying out online dating should use their profile to sell themselves.

James Preece – author of The Insider's Dating Guide – noted the message acts as a personal advert and so people should not be afraid to list what they are passionate about.

"Always include a 'hook' or an invitation. This gives the viewer the chance to make contact as they will spot a way of breaking the ice," he added.

Individuals should look to present the best possible version of themselves without having to lie, Mr Preece observed, while no negative comments should be included.

The specialist continued by saying that lying at the beginning will eventually lead to an erosion in trust once the person finds out.

Mr Preece's comments follow on from a study published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior that found those looking for love often deliberately conceal their political leanings.
