Single soldiers who find a prospective partner through online dating should try to relax when it comes to meeting the person in real life, it has been suggested.

Rachel Machacek tried a year's worth of dating scenarios and claimed one of the most important factors on a first date is to not over-analyse the situation, Time.com reports.

The expert stated one of the biggest mistakes individuals make when together for the first time is to be scared of awkward pauses.

She explained: "Don't feel like you have to fill in every silence by talking. I would get so nervous when there was silence that I would just talk and talk."

Allowing for conversation breaks can enable one person to think about what the other has been saying, Ms Machacek added.

A recent post on Your Tango suggested women should correspond with a guy they find through the internet on a number of occasions before agreeing to meet up – as this will allow time to evaluate compatibility.
