People should be specific when describing themselves in online dating profiles.

This is according to expert Christine Hooker, who told the Atlantic Wire that too often people use generic terms to try to get their personality across.

Individuals should use examples of activities they claim to enjoy to add layers to the statement, such as stating what their favourite film or book is.

"Make sure each answer reveals who you are and is engaging. Generic answers are one of the worst things people can do," Ms Hooker observed.

As well as this, individuals need to proofread their work before uploading it, as sloppy grammar and punctuation will act as a turn-off for many, she stated.

Individuals will want to feel like the other person has put some time and effort into their profile before deciding whether or not to meet up with them.

Ms Hooker also remarked that both men and women have to select good photos, with a headshot and a full-body picture required.
