Solider 'heard his baby's cries on Christmas Day'

A soldier from Wales has revealed how his girlfriend gave birth on Christmas Day while he was fighting abroad, but a phone call enabled him to hear the boy's cries.

Infantry soldier Danny Hughes, 19, from Buckley in north Wales, spoke of how 8lb Alfie Lee was originally due on Boxing Day but was delivered as an early Christmas present after his girlfriend Jenny Chung went into labour.

"I called Jenny's mobile straight away and was amazed when she answered. She was actually in labour and had taken the mobile in case I called," he said.
Fusilier Hughes said he is looking forward to seeing his son for the first time when he returns for a two-week break, after first completing his patrols in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, troops from the 1st Battalion, the Royal Welsh, have been keeping in touch with their families back home by recording bedtime stories on a dictaphone and sending them back.
