The brave troops from the 1st Battalion, The Royal Welsh are battling the Taliban on a daily basis, but they are still finding time for their sons and daughters back home.
When they find time to put down their guns, they are reading bedtime stories into a Dictaphone and sending them back to Blighty, Walesonline.co.uk reported.
The soldiers take a five-minute time out in the Padre Andy Latifa tent to read a story which is then copied onto a CD and mailed to the kids.
Sergeant Neil Barnshaw, a non-commissioned officer, told the news provider that it is reassuring for his children to hear his voice even though he’s thousands of miles away.
"It’s a good idea for the kids to be able to hear me even though I’m over here. Normally at night I’ll read to them at bedtime. They particularly like Winnie the Pooh stories and it’s all they watch on television," he added.
Members of the armed forces are also staying in touch with friends and family through Facebook and other social networking sites like forcespenpals.co.uk.
