Soldiers praised for heroics in Afghanistan

Heroic soldiers from Merseyside have been praised for the courage they have shown while on duty in Afghanistan.

Lance Corporal Wayne Floyd and Lance Corporal Andrew Armitage were both given special mentions at a medals parade for troops from 2nd Battalion the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, Wirral News reports.

L-Cpl Floyd was hailed for rescuing a village elder caught up in cross fire near Nad-e Ali, while L-Cpl Armitage was lauded for helping an Afghan soldier after an improvised explosive device went off.

The former said of his rescue attempt: "We brought him back to the base for medical attention. Fortunately it was a clean wound and he made a full recovery."

He explained his actions were "just my job", yet his seniors said his behaviour had served to strengthen relations between British troops and the Afghan people.

Sergeant John Stone and Lance Corporal Daniel Stone were recently awarded special plaques by the mayor of their hometown of Chard for their services in the military.
