Prince Charles helps launch military awards

His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales has launched military awards aimed at recognising the hard work soldiers are doing in overseas war zones such as Afghanistan.

The 2010 Sun Military Awards, also referred to as "The Millies", will honour soldiers on a variety of categories, including Overcoming Diversity, Best Sailor or Marine, Outstanding Soldier and True Grit.

An expert judging panel including Sun columnist Jeremy Clarkson, Dame Kelly Holmes, an Olympic runner and former soldier, TV's Ross Kemp and four ex-Services chiefs, will determine the winners.

Writing in the Sun about the awards, Prince Charles expressed a desire to see the public taking part in the honours by nominating their military heroes before the deadline on September 30th.

He went on to state that he is pleased to support the Millies, "an event which provides us all with a special opportunity to recognise the work of our Armed Forces".

Former soldier Ken Timms and his great-nephew Daniel Brown recently took to the water to raise money for troops' charity for Help for Heroes.
