Earlier this summer a Poppy Capsule was briefly introduced on the London Eye – the famous big wheel attraction in the capital.

The landmark's official website reports that it teamed up with The Royal British Legion for a Poppy Picnic on the Eye.

The on-board picnic was hosted to launch the Legion Poppy Picnic campaign in South East London. One of the people there was Anthony Clayden, a veteran who the Legion helps.

First run last year, Poppy Picnic involved more than 1,000 picnics in the UK in 2013.

The Legion wants people to have their own picnics this summer, which will bring in cash for its work.

London Eye Spokesperson Stephanie Francis has said that the landmark was delighted to give its welcome to the Legion for the launch event, 135 metres over London.

Mr Clayden, who was injured in service, has been helped with things like moving house and buying new appliances by the Legion.

"If it wasn’t for them my partner and I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy Christmas together in our new home. When they invited me to help launch Poppy Picnics I jumped at the chance," he said.

Mr Clayden added that he hopes people will hold Poppy Picnics, which will not only let them thank the Forces but bring in cash for the Royal British Legion – something veterans such as him rely on.

The main Poppy Picnic day was held on June 21st, but the Legion wants people to hold the occasions all through the summer months.

Another launch event, back in May, saw Kym Marsh from Coronation Street, picnicking with The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment soldiers.

The Royal British Legion spends a weekly £1.4 million to give support to people serving, veterans and families.
