Pictures 'all important' for online dating

Adding an appropriate picture is one of the most important steps when setting up an online dating profile, as users will be looking to give the right impression to potential partners straight from the off.

It is therefore essential people use a recent image that does not mislead others and is a true reflection of what they can expect should a meeting be arranged.

With this in mind, online daters may be wise to avoid the mistakes made by some users compiled by The Chive, whose photos and captions are unlikely to attract the cream of the crop.

In one picture, a man is seen leaning against a wheelie bin wearing a black bag for an outfit, while another shows a tattooed gentleman wearing dungarees, drinking beer and wielding a pistol.

And while one guy chose to pose in a Spider-Man costume, other users may find a simple up-to-date snap of their head and shoulders is likely to garner more attention from the opposite sex.
