As you get closer to someone, and go on more and more dates with them, you could well be living through one of the most exciting times in your life – especially if you think this could turn into something long-term.

As a little inspiration for those looking for someone new, here are nine of the reasons why beginning a promising new relationship can be so wonderful… Lots of the things we mention remain throughout a relationship even when it's not so new, of course!

One: Doing new things

New partners and potential partners often show us their favourite bars and restaurants, that spot just outside the city where you're in the countryside and the sun looks beautiful as it sets, or a park we never knew existed.

They might even be our companion as we head to a whole new country. Of course, couples constantly try new things, no matter how new their relationship is, but in the beginning you get to try some of the favourite things of someone who you're just getting to know.

Two: The sparkle of their messages

You might have forgotten that feeling of having someone who makes you really excited when they get in touch, and whose messages mean so much. Maybe it's not something you've ever experienced? Most of us know what it's like, though, when your working day is made that bit more lovely because you keep getting texts from your other half.

Three: They boost your confidence

Suddenly there's someone new who you feel might really value you. They might be telling you how beautiful they think you are, or giving words of encouragement about the things you're doing in your life, and it is a great confidence boost.

Four: They make you try your best

At the same time, you might well feel like the person you're with is making you want to live up to their expectations – maybe they even make you want to try that bit harder to reach your goals in life?  We're often inspired by our partners.

Five: They make you hopeful

Maybe this will last, maybe you'll get to know each other even better, possibly over many years? Many of us are cautious early on in a relationship, but the fact remains that if things are going well, we often can't help daydreaming about the possibilities of the future. And if you're doing this with your new man or woman, it could be a good sign!

Six: You have someone new to recommend books to!

And films, and TV shows and music – and you get to hear someone else's tastes, too. In many a new relationship, you end up finding some of your favourite new things at this point of the process. You may also be happy to have someone new to experience these things with – someone to enjoy a good film with, for example.

Seven: You could soon have a new family

No, we're not rushing you to the labour ward! But a few months down the line, you'll likely be meeting your other half's mum, dad and siblings.

Eight: Presents and surprises

The excitement of the early part of getting together with someone often involves little presents and surprises. Suddenly classics like the bunch of flowers – which can seem like a simple cliche from afar – can acquire a new personal resonance.

Nine: Being yourself

You may be starting to realise you have someone who is willing and ready to hear all about your thoughts and feelings. Though we all know that it's best not to flood anyone with these, finding a new person in your life to express your deeper feelings to can be really refreshing.
