A man has proposed to his girlfriend, with a ring made from his amputated right leg, it has been reported.

Mike Perrett lost a leg after falling off a mountain while volunteering at an Indian orphanage in 2006.

However, he has refused to let that prevent him from getting on with life and decided to tie the knot with his wife Melita, with the special ring.

The ring itself is made from the bone of his amputated leg, according to a story published on Buzzfeed.

His wife Melita said in an interview with the website: "He was told he was lucky to be alive. The force taken to break the bone would have skewered him if his legs had not buckled."

It was reported that Mike wanted to keep some of the bone from the surgery, so the team of medics agreed to give him part of his shin bone.

Later, in 2011, he arranged to have some of the pieces of bone put into the engagement ring.

The ring itself is constructed from platinum which contains two pieces of Mike’s bone and a quarter-carat diamond.

The bone, according to Buzzfeed, had been completely sterilised before being used in the ring.

Meita said he was inspired by a friend who wore imitation bone earrings made of plastic.

Commenting, Melita said: "I guess why it’s so special to me…because I think it shows his bravely coming to terms with something like that so positively… which has to be a good attribute for marriage."

The couple tied the knot in the Philippines and are now expecting their second child. ADNFCR-2867-ID-801791194-ADNFCR
