Single soldiers looking for a partner might consider somebody who is not the same age as them.

Bernadette Lynass from the Scotsman explains: "Emotional age can be different from physical age and people of all ages share interests, views, desires and needs."

It is therefore important not to completely dismiss somebody simply because they are older or younger.

Ms Lynass also says it is important to have good communication in a relationship and be honest about key issues that could affect the relationship.

Telling a new partner about strong beliefs – such as having children or wanting to marry – is a wise move, as it should avoid disappointment in the long run, the expert adds.

But people should tailor their approach according to their individual situation, as a piece from the Huffington Post recently suggested it is hard to live up to expectations and instead couples should be themselves.
