A dog that had its head trapped in a jug for two months has been released from its plastic prison at last, and given the rather humorous name Bucket by the family that rescued it.

The stray dog, thought to be a German Shepherd mix, is believed to have got its head caught in the animal feeder in a barn when it was living as a stray. Unable to get it off, the dog was then seen running around the local neighbourhood with the plastic tub on its head for more than two months.

Audra Bohannon and her family, of Northwest Harris County, Texas, had a real challenge on their hands when trying to help the five-month old puppy. They tracked it for weeks after having first spotted it running around, but it proved to be quite elusive.

"Every night I went to bed thinking about that dog and I really felt bad for him having that on his head," Ms Bohannon said.

After finally managing to catch Bucket, the kind-hearted Ms Bohannon managed to use a pair of metal shears to cut through the jug, freeing the puppy's head at last. "It’s amazing how this dog had a Bucket on his head for two months and now he’s playing like any other dog," she wrote on Facebook after posting a video of the rescue.

Elsewhere in the animal world, firefighters in Cornwall have made a rather strange rescue this week. While they are normally called upon to bring a spooked cat or two down from a tree, this one brigade was called to rescue a pigeon from a roof.

That may seem odd given that the pigeon has the wings to fly down from its lofty perch, but the call was actually made by the RSPCA, after the bird was spotted tangled in anti-roosting nets on the roof.

The firefighters closed down the Penzance street for 15 minutes while the bird was freed. ADNFCR-2867-ID-801762714-ADNFCR
