One of the world's most popular cricket stars has lent their support to a top military charity, it has been revealed.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is set to join other well-known sports personalities at the Kia Oval for the inaugural international Help for Heroes fundraiser, Cricket for Heroes.

Dhoni made his international debut in 2004 and led India to victory in the ICC World Twenty20 in 2007.

Then in 2009, he took them to the top of the World Test rankings for 18 months. He is set to join fellow Indian star Virender Sehwag, Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi and South African ace Herschelle Gibbs in boosting the support and profile of the charity.

Speaking about the fundraising bid, Mr Dhoni, said: "I am delighted to be joining so many cricketing superstars at the Kia Oval on Thursday September 17th and supporting such a worthy cause. 

"I’ve always enjoyed playing cricket in England and I would urge all sports fans to support Help for Heroes on September 17th and watch some truly world class performers in action."

Mr Dhoni and the rest of his team will be participating in a special fundraising cricket game and are set to be coached by Gary Kirsten and managed by the great Indian Sunil Gavaskar.

Mr Dhoni has been given the honorary title of Lieutenant Colonel in the Parachute Regiment of the Indian Air Force.

He also recently completed a para-jump of 1,250 feet after a two-week training programme at the Paratroopers Training School in Agra.
