When soldiers return home from their tours of duty they better not plan on sitting around the house and putting their feet up otherwise they could get their ear bent.

New research from esure has found that couples spend 40 minutes a day at each other’s throats about domestic issues, with leaving clothes lying about the place the number one problem for 35 per cent of people.

Putting off home improvements is another one which can set fireworks off, with 28 per cent of couples saying they fight over this, while 24 per cent said doing the washing up is the biggest problem.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure, said that even the smallest things can see soldiers row with their better half.

"Forgetting to take the rubbish out or making a shoddy DIY attempt may not seem like serious crimes but as the research shows, domestic chores and household responsibilities can cause arguments in even the most stable of relationships," he added.

According to a study published by the University of Western Ontario recently, soldiers who do their fair share of household chores are in happier relationships.
