A host of celebrities have pledged to support soldiers at a charity event in Deeside.

Former soldier Simon Weston will host a supper at the Civic Hall, Connah's Quay to raise cash in aid of Help for Heroes, the Leader Live reports.

Dancing on Ice contestant Denise Welch, her husband Tim Healy and Coronation Street's Bev Callard are lined up among others to attend the gathering on Friday May 13th.

Helping to plan the dinner is Alan Sullivan, director of Jumsul Construction, who said: "We want to build homes for heroes so that our soldiers returning from war can get decent accommodation and quickly."

Comedy performances, a DJ set and a charity auction are in the pipeline for the event and prizes include a holiday in southern Spain, signed Liverpool Football Club memorabilia and a 47-inch television.

The news follows the announcement that a sailor has embarked on a 166-mile walk to raise money for the same charity.

Warrant Officer Dave Chandler trekked from Wembley Stadium to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, the Southend Standard has stated.
