An animal shelter worker has been arrested after being accused of copulating with some of the dogs he helped to look after, it has been reported.

Jonathan Ford, 32 who worked at the ‘I Love Lucy Pet Rescue’ shelter in Hattieville, Arkansas, was arrested on suspicion of bestiality by the Pope County Sheriff’s Department earlier this week.

On their website, the centre claims to find stray dogs and give them a home.

The investigation into Ford's conduct is ongoing and the department says more charges may be brought against Ford as they continue their investigation.

The dogs that Ford is alleged to have been intimate with have been moved to a different shelter.

Annette Williams, a worker at a shop near I Love Lucy Pet Rescue, said she was saddened by the news, especially as the area has quite a high number of stray dogs.

Referring to the alleged crime, she said: "I was shocked because I didn't know it was happening. I'm very very shocked. I'm very much a dog lover. They have issues to begin with and to think that someone would show them kindness for a little bit and mistreat them again, that’s more than I can think of.

"I'm glad it came to light and hopefully it won't ever happen again."
