Online dating is becoming an increasingly popular option for individuals - including single soldiers - to meet the girl or guy of their dreams, it has been suggested.

Writing for Courier Post Online, Steve Wood and Samantha Costa noted web courtship can provide the basis of longer term relationships, even marriage.

The duo cited Stanford University research that claimed nearly one-in-three partnerships were formed over the internet, making it the second-most common way of meeting people after friend recommendations.

"Many who tire of playing the so-called dating game - made complicated with counter-intuitive rules and false veneers - find each other online," the journalists explained.

They added a recent Online Dating Magazine survey showed 120,000 marriages a year are courtesy of internet correspondence.

Dating coach Evan Marc Katz recently observed online dating is the best forum for searching the widest possible selection of prospective mates and is available at just a click of the mouse.
