'Hoedown and a hog roast' for Macclesfield troops

Residents in Macclesfield are being encouraged to help raise funds for injured soldiers of the 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment.

Cheshire East mayor councillor Gordon Baxendale announced a hoedown and a hog roast will be held to generate the cash, the Manchester Evening News reports.

It will take place in the marquee at The Waggon and Horses pub on Manchester Road in Congleton on Saturday August 21st at 19:30 BST.

Proceeds from the get-together will go towards computer consoles and DVDs to help wounded troops see out their recovery periods.

Mr Baxendale said he would encourage locals to attend the spectacle and "celebrate the fantastic bravery and stoicism of our servicemen and women in Afghanistan".

Tickets for the gathering will cost £10 each.

Fundraiser Christine Bonner is currently performing a 150-mile charity walk for the Royal Anglian Benevolent Fund.

She will be accompanied by ten soldiers on her trip from Peterborough to Chelmsford.
