Steering clear of cliches is a good idea, he added, while individuals should not be afraid to list their best features - such as a great smile - when writing the message.

When it comes to setting up a date, men should show they are confident by sending an email asking to meet.

Mr Spalton said the contents of the message are very important, as people want to make sure they give off the right impression.

Because of this, males should reference something from the female's profile, as this shows they have read it before deciding to get in touch.

People may also need to be thick-skinned, as not everyone they get in contact with will respond to their advances immediately.
