Over £1 million has been raised to help wounded soldiers  from the tough mudders challenge, it has been announced.

Tough mudders is a charity event whereby participants are encouraged to climb through mud, diving into icy water and running through electric wires at Tough Mudder events.

The funds raised from the event will help the charity Help for Heroes provide much needed facilities to help wounded, injured and sick army personnel recover through sports.

The challenge has helped to raise more money for adapted sports and recreational facilities included as part of Help for Heroes Sports Recovery programme, which will assist wounded servicemen and women with their recovery.

In addition, it will also help encourage users of all abilities to exercise and achieve their goals.

It will also go some way in helping injured soldiers to rebuild basic mobility and strength.

Commenting on the developments,  Paul Simcox, Volunteer & Charity Manager at Tough Mudder UK, said: ““We would like to take this opportunity to thank our ‘Mudders’ who have put themselves through our gruelling challenges and continued to be loyal supporters of Help for Heroes.

“Helping others is what Tough Mudder is all about and we are delighted to see our ‘Mudders’ helping these inspiring men and women continue their own sporting endeavours. We challenge our ‘Mudders’ to pull together to raise the next million by the end of 2015.”

Thanks to the new facilities funded by the challenge, many injured veterans and serviceman have since taken up new sports at grassroots level, or gone on to represent their country at events such as the Invictus Games and Paralympics.

Some have even gone on to complete various endurance events, including marathons, North Pole excursions, among other things.

Martin Colclough, head of Help for Heroes Sports Recovery said that the money raised so far has been “outstanding”.

He added: “Because of their efforts, our Sports Recovery Programme is stronger than ever and is helping injured Servicemen and women back to both excellent mental and physical health. We would like to thank Tough Mudder and their ‘Mudders’ for their on-going support and look forward to a long lasting partnership.”ADNFCR-2867-ID-801750279-ADNFCR
